We need your help rebranding Flint OS!

Posted by | · · · | general · news | 18 Comments on We need your help rebranding Flint OS!

Hi All

We are rebranding! Recently our trademark application for Flint OS has been challenged by a company with a similar name. Although they operate in a different market sector with a completely different product they have access to far more legal resources than we could ever hope to have.

After trying to negotiate we have made the difficult decision to spend our time and resources on the product. Therefore we will need to rebrand! We are keeping the logo but will need a new name.

When we started we wanted to create a simple tool to allow users to get the most out of their devices , be it s a small single board computer or a fully fledged PC. This is still our core mission. You can use the form here to submit name suggestions.

In order to keep the suggestions in line with our goals here are some guidelines :

  • Relevant to our mission in some way (use the form to explain your reasoning please)
  • Anything related to Boaty Mcboatface will be enjoyed but probably not considered.
  • The name should work across different cultures and countries.

We will be accepting submissions for the next 4 days at the form here. After 4 days we will review all the submissions and shortlist around 10 names which we will then perform some checks over to ensure there are no similar products or companies using the name.

Thanks in advance we will give an update once we start to shortlist!

CHAPS,
Did you supply your logo as part of your trademark application? Together with the name, would suggest it is different from the company challenging you. Hence no need to change your name. if however you did supply it and have no appetite to challenge the ruling, would encourage you not to ask for free names over the internet! not the best way to establish the most important element of your corporate identity. if you can’t afford to do it with an agency, give the task to a copywriter experienced in naming?

Good luck.

Grahame

ps. if there is equity in your existing name, you should fight for it. it is not expensive to employ a trade mark lawyer. for an initial sum they will give you their professional opinion on registering your name.

Hey guys thanks for the support, we did seek legal advice before making the decision to rebrand. there was a possibility that we may lose in court and incur significant costs. ultimately we want to focus our attention and budget on the product. We have some great momentum with the product now and want to be able to focus on this without legal threats hanging over us.

I agree with grahame. If you apply for your trademark to include your logo type, not just the name, and its in a completely different sector, then it should pass.

YOU SHOULD FIGHT FOR YOUR CURRENT NAME!
I dON’T THINK IT’S FAIR THAT YOU NEED TO GIVE UP YOUR NAME FOR A COMPANY THAT DOESN’T EVEN WORK IN THE SAME SECTOR THAT YOU DO

What about SHale OS? I think that sounds rather nice. I’m with you guys, and don’t think you should take the risk in court. It’s more productive to focus on the current project rather than a legal battle.

SteelFire OS. Flint and steel are a common motif for sparking a fire. And since you’re creating an OS you could say your starting this OS’s fire. Plus steel fits with chromium’s metallic nomenclature. Steel OS was too boring in my opinion, so while a bit more ham-fisted, SteelFire just kinda sounds better.

If you want to keep on the path of stones, what about Ore OS? As ore is strong people will think that the os is strong against threats and stable.

CHromium is bracketed on the Periodic table by Vanadium and Manganese. Merge the two Names and you get Mangdium OS. ITs a mouthful, but then again so is CHromium OS, or the not very catchy “Ubuntu OS”

the literal translation of the German word “Feuerstein” for the English “Flint” wold be “Firestone”. For Me that would sound good -> Firestone OS.
