Google Play comes to Chrome OS

So the rumours were true! Android apps are coming to Chromebooks.

With the roll out of v53, the Asus Flip , Acer Chromebook R11 and 2015 Pixel will be able to run Google Play allowing them to download Android applications.

There is also a list of other models that will be supported sometime in 2016. There are unfortunately some notable exceptions on the list such as the very popular Acer c720.

Fragmentation between Chromebooks that can and cannot run Android apps will be very confusing to consumers and seems to be an internal resources based decision rather than a hardware decision.

There is another event later today that will be open for developers. We will be there asking questions about what this means for Chromium OS and why the fragmentation has arisen.
